L.K. Comstock installed the communications systems for train control and dispatch functions for the Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) project.

The ATS projects centralized into one Rail Control Center (RCC) the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) dispatch and train control functions. These operations previously took place in 23 master towers and dispatch offices spread across the city.

L.K. Comstock installed the microprocessor-controlled field code units, fiber-optic equipment and cable, architectural finishes and all data work in the three-story RCC building in Manhattan. It also installed wayside automatic vehicle identification (AVI) units on both the subway and elevated structure.

Unique Features

L.K. Comstock worked jointly with software provider Siemens Transportation Systems to test all voice, radio and data communications. It also completed the system retrofit and fiber-optic system linking the RCC with the NYCT’s Power Control Center (PCC), which houses the city’s transit, police, emergency, public address and security systems.

ATS created a new operating standard for the entire New York City subway system when it became operational in 2004.
