A key railroad in the greater Chicago region, the Chicago South Shore Line (CSS) provides freight and passenger rail service along the south shore of Lake Michigan from Chicago to South Bend, Ind.

RailWorks Track Services rehabilitated a 7.5-mile stretch of freight rail from Michigan City, Ind. to La Porte, Ind. Work was completed over six weeks during five separate 12-hour work windows and included tie replacement, rail replacement and installation, track surfacing and destressing, site cleanup and thermite welding.

Unique Features

This project presented multiple challenges to the RailWorks team. Locations to store equipment and materials were 7.5 miles apart, so the crew had to travel back and forth to the sites. Additionally, the CSS has steep rail banks with limited right-of-way, and the weather was rainy and cold for much of the project. All work took place during the COIVD-19 pandemic, which required the team to follow and adapt to changing guidelines and safety practices.
