The South Hills Village Rail Center is a maintenance facility that consists of 10 total – 400’ bays that serve as maintenance, paint booths, and wash bays for light rail vehicles. The facility is strategically located at the end of both the Red and Blue lines. These two lines run from the South Hills Village through downtown Pittsburgh to the Northern side of the city.

Unique Features

The project was divided into 5 phases to be completed separately before the next phase began to limit the impact on the Port Authority operations. The following is a detailed summary of each work item that occurred during each phase:
o Remove and reinstall 1062 TF of elevated rail
o Remove and reinstall 1370 TF of concrete embedded rail
o Installation of 200 TF of cast-in-place suspended rail plate anchorages
o Modification of over 400 existing anchorages to usable condition
o Pre-demo, Intermediate, and Post-pour track survey submissions for each bay involving:
- 1/8” tolerances on gage, horizonal & vertical alignment, cross-level,
and elevation
- 1/32” tolerances on elevation and alignment in car leveling zones
